IG action=IG consequences
May. 24th, 2009 06:28 amI've decided to post my thoughts on this and it's not just because of recent events in H&M. I think it needs bearing a reminder for everyone, myself included. I know I don't think about the ripple effects my pups actions have with others in the village. Not just those that are canon mates or a part of their 'group' of friends/family but the village at large.
If a thread is not held behind closed doors, it's fair game. Even in businesses because there are store front windows. Meaning anyone can notice your actions and perhaps even over hear a conversation unless you specifically say in your thread they went in the back and locked the door. Case in point: Lucas/Tom/Martha in the woods when Lucas was camping. I'm not saying a pup would take part in the thread obviously but Max could have easily over heard it while walking in the woods. Gabrielle could have seen it while hunting a deer. The Monkey King could have witnessed while running from tree top to tree top. Now I can control what my pups see/hear because I'm the mun. I can't control anyone else's nor should I. I can't control who hears my conversations nor sees my actions in real life either.
Even Kyra shooting Logan on the streets. We had specific people involved but the whole village could have gathered round and seen the psychotic break. Dorothy Gale now has free rein to look at Kyra like she's nuts and even run in terror from the crazy lady even though they've never met in game.
What you do and say has consequences to those around you. How you react to people and others react to you. I can have one of my pups overhear a conversation that leads to a freak out by my pup. Say they have a huge problem with infidelity and hear pup A talk to pup B about sleeping around on a lover or being cheated on by a lover. This will cause a spark in my pup and they might go on a drinking binge and say something while drunk that will cause an argument for two other pups. Ripple effect. It's there in life and it's there in game.
Those are just incidental reactions with no great consequences. There are actions that happen that have far reaching implications and need to be thought about thoroughly and not just oooo shiny plot. When you write a story, you outline everything (at least I do) to how this action will effect something else four more chapters into the story. TV shows generally have a thread going through them where in the finale you smack yourself on the forehead and say OMG it was there all along. Now I see how the ripple effect worked. This led to this and then that led to that. It's the same in game. Before taking an action, think it through and if you believe it might even peripherally affect someone else email/PM them just to give a heads up. It only takes a minute out of your time and it saves hurt feelings/pissy reactions.
I would much rather have way too much information than too little.

Fun, spur of the moment ideas are great. But think about what kind of fallout they may cause for other people first.

Date: 2009-05-25 01:17 am (UTC)We just had some people leave the game with barely notice to the pups they were involved with ingame and some canon updates that weren't talked about beforehand. So now there is scrambling with what to do and how to handle it.
It just got me thinking about IG actions and the consequences thereof. =)
